Adolescent children belonging to the marginalised communities will–perhaps for the first time– spread the word on the importance of birth registration in Surguja district.

Twenty six children will be involved in a month-long campaign on the importance of birth registration using street theatre as the medium.  Why street theatre? “Simply because the reach of radio & television is limited and newspapers hardly reach those remote villages,” says Sumit Singh, Assistant Project Co-ordinator of CAMP, which has undertaken the task of empowering adolescents using media tools. The project is being supported by UNICEF, Raipur.

Banglanatak.com trained 26 adolescents from four blocks of Surguja district (Ambiapur, Batauli, Mainpat and Udaipur) in street theater for two days during which they learnt the importance of birth registration and related issues, script a play and stage it at street corners to hold the attention of the audiences.

“We learnt how to sing and dance too and we are now confident of staging the play.  We will take it to various places and tell people why it is important to have a certificate,” says Jyoti.  “We have also promised ourselves that we will apply for the certificate,” says Pramod Das.

They will go around Surguja district as per the following schedule and stage the play:
